The poem My Last Duchess is to the highest degree a powerful Duke, and his beautiful, flirtatious wife who has two different personalities, 1 that was reality and the other was the lady in the ikon. The poem begins and ends with him grief the loss of his deceased Duchess, but from the way that the mighty Duke speaks, he knows more about her wipeout than he leads us to believe. The Duke chooses his book of account very care entirey, when he talks to his friend about the painting of his wife. He only drops small hints, to his friend about the death of his Duchess. Which leads the reader to believe that the Duke killed his wife, or had some ace to put her to her death. The duke describes himself as a compassionate and loving manhood, but the readers define him as a deceitful and jealous man.
As the Duke speaks of his Duchess to his guest, in the beginning, he sounds extremely compassionate and caring towards her and that he actually misses her. We see this in lines one and two where he states Thats my last Duchess calico on the wall, looking as if she were alive. When he says he tries to check it seem like he genially misses her and is mentioning her saucer by saying that she was so beautiful you even see it in the painting.
But as a reader when you read this we see that he maybe didnt love her as lots as he says he does, for example any man or even anybody that has lost a loved one feels a lot more sorrow when they talk about someone theyve lost. But in this case the duke only mentions her beauty once and he does not even address it directly.
The dukes deception grows as the poem nears the middle. This is really noticed in line twenty-two to line twenty-four when the duke says … A emotional state . . . how shall I say? . . . excessively soon made glad, too easily impressed; she liked whateer she looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
