They told him stories about the braking down of men, thither in the dockyards of Chicago, of what happened to them afterwards-stories to make you flesh creep- still Jurgis would only laugh. He had only been there for four months, and he was young, and giant besides. There was too oft health in him. He could not even presuppose how it would feel to be beaten. Upton Sinclair allows us to travel back to the Progressive era (early 1900s) at the height of the immigration travail to America. All with the goal of taking a piece of the American dream and becoming successful in doing so. Sinclairs imagery of the matrimony in the first chapter allows the reader to believe that there is a slight hope that a family was able to stand the ladder of being sucked into a never ending cycle of rebellion to greatness then being torn to pieces in the stockyards. The part Jurgis is Sinclairs best example of a man with everything at his fingertips but slowly loses it because of unforeseen events.

Jurgis Rudkus is described as the hero of the stage but every hero has a weakness. The first depression of Jurgis to the reader is that his physical strength can conquer anything but Sinclair quickly rattles that theory with a constant influx of misfortunes. In the initial stages of the novel, the two most striking features of Jurgis is his physical appearing and his simple peasant mindset. This is apparent when Sinclair describes him as he with the flop shoulders and the giant hands and great black eyes with beetle brows during the wedding reception.
