John Davidson Rockefeller was born in Richford, New York in 1839. He was the second of six children in his family. His parents were William Avery Rockefeller, a change of location sales manhood, and Eliza Davidson, a housewife.

In 1859, at the age of 20, John went into the produce commission business with Maurice B. Clarke.
In 1863 the partners strengthened and oil refinery in Clevelands industrial area The Flats. The refinery was directly possess by Andrews, Clarke & Company which consisted of Rockefeller, Clarke and two of his brothers and a chemist named Samuel Andrews.
