On September 1, 1939 German invaded the monarch butterfly nation of Poland which in turn set off universe War II. England and France as promised declared war on Germany deuce days later and soon the fighting began. Before the actions of the German government against Poland Germany had began to rebuild its Army, Air powerfulness, and Navy. Germany had again become a major power just what the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 had assay to prevent. During the buildup of arms the Navy was not given as much support or equipment as the Army and Air Force had been given. Only after the war had started had major ship create occurred. Germany was not a land locked country but unless had little access to major ocean ways from Germany itself. after invading Poland the ones that Germany had were cut off and kept under slopped watch by the British Navy then considered to be the most powerful in the world.
In order for Germany to be successful in its war against the allies it would have to crave England of its supplies, food, and men. That meant having capital ships in the Atlantic to attack merchant ships and convoys from American to England.
Germany introduced procedure RHEINÃœBUNG (Rhine Exercise) which would send the new battleship von Bismarck along with heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and other support ships into the Atlantic to wreck havoc on Englands supply line. Operation Berlin had been a success earlier in the war when in 1940 when German battle ships had snuck past England through the Denmark qualifying and sank 22 merchant ships that were carrying vital supplies to England. The German government was looking for some other naval success such as this one and the British government was looking to stop it from ever happening. The involution of the Denmark Straits claimed the lives of more than 3500 men, and two great battleships the H.M.S. Hood and the Bismarck.
