Carol Ann Duffy has written a poem called Valentine which involves a distrustful tone throughout. The poet discusses her true feelings towards her partner in giving to her an crotchety gift that she bought her valentine. She uses several techniques throughout such as raillery choice, imagery and sound imagery to overlook her opinion on have sex.
Duffy first introduces a cynical tone to the poem in the first line of stanza one with:
Not a passing rose or a satin heart,
At this pass in the poem Duffy is telling the reader the gift that she is giving her lover is not a cliché. Duffy uses a statement to emphasis that it is a unusual gift. This unusual gift is highlighted as it is a un traditionalistic gift to bewilder to your lover. This shows you how deep her feelings are. Duffy starts the stanza by stating that she pass alongs her partner an onion plant:

At this moment in the poem Duffy is giving her lover her gift. She uses a short sentence and an intimately dull tone and this shows she is a tough character. She repeats I give you an onion and this shows that the gift doesnt need to be a nice gift to stick with her forever as the fume of an onion is really strong and will create tears.
Duffys use of imagery also ensures that her cynicism towards love is felt.

At this point in the poem Duffy is stating that the gift that she has bought her Valentine isnt a traditional gift and is a very unusual one. She states this in stanza five-spot and gives it its own line to emphasise that it isnt a cute, cuddly nice present.This is important to the poem as it shows her feelings towards her Valentine and that she wants to give a gift which will have layers and plenty of meanings and feelings in the thought of the gift.
