People oft say that this or that person has non yet found himself. But the self is not something wizard finds, it is something one creates, Thomas Szasz (1973). In David Kaplans short story, Doe Season, Andy is a young girl struggling to discover who she is or she wants to be, often doing things to fit in; how of all time, through the course of a some unlikely events, she is finally able to truly find come to the fore who she is. Kaplan uses the romp of hunting and the cruelities of killing to illustrate the differences in the sport between men adn women. He also uses the dream and the bird of Minerva to help illustrate the final realization.
Owls have generally been pattern to be symbols of recognition, often being brought up with dreams. The nozzle which had woke up Andy appears to be the controller of her dream showing her what she needs to see. Kaplan states, When she woke again, everything had changed. The owl was gone, the woods were still, and she sensed light, blue and pale, light where before in that location had been none. At the beginning of the dream, Andy didnt even notice she was alseep. During the dream, the atmosphere appeared complete: the air was extremely warm, the forest more beautiful than ever before. Then appeared the doe she had shot right in the heart.



As she begins to examine the wound, she notices when she touches the heart, it is still pumping. Already feeling guilty closely shooting the doe, the image of the doe falling, falling, then rising again, retell itself whenever she closed her eyes, Andys frustrations grow when she watches the doe stagger off to expire in the forest. The owl did exactly what it is said to do, provide wisdom to people. The owl showed Andy exactly what she had did when she shot the doe and made her character it, trading pain for pain when the does heart begins to burn her hand.
