Views of Women

In truth, though, it is the very compend of the issues involved that makes this a moral fabrication. Whether one decides that perfection is or is non real is not what makes this a moral work. Greene has as his intention the improvement of life by examining it in all told its forms and ramifications, and this is the essential moral act of all good fiction.

In the novel, the central figure, Sarah, is seen through the eyes of Bendrix and the pages of her diary. Bendrix has been jealous of her for some time, persuade that when she ended the liaison with him it had to be because of another man. He learns that this is not the case, discovering that his "rivals" be God and the Catholic Church. Sarah is the first to begin speculative her agnosticism. She prays to God during the bombing of the house in which she and Bendrix are impact and promises that if they are spared, she leave end the affair and dedicate herself to God. That is on the nose what she does, joining the Catholic Church and finding true faith to replace the faith of desperation she flaunted when the bombs were falling. Sarah's questions about God genuinely begin long before the bombs start to fall. She had been using Bendrix's sock to fill a void in her life, although she could see that for Bendrix the affair was even more important, becoming an obsession that included the past, the present, and the next: "His love is like a medieval chastity smash-up: only when he is there, with me, in me, does he

The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys takes its exceed from Charlotte Bront?'s Jane Eyre by telling the fabrication of Rochester's first wife. Bront? called the wife Bertha, unless Rhys calls her Antoinette. Most of this novel is given in Antoinette's knowledge words, and today we hear her version of her courtship and marriage to Rochester, who comes off in this novel as a thorough villain. Underlying this story is the idea that women in the nineteenth century were like aliens in a patriarchal country, figures with no rights and little chance of escaping from the domination of men.

This is whence the title derives, for the Sargasso Sea is a tidy sum of the ocean where there is no movement and where ships that wander in simply sit, unable to escape because there is no afoot(predicate) to push them. Antoinette is not only imprisoned in her marriage, just now she has a jailer, also a woman, co-opted by the system to precaution in the degradation of another. This woman is Grace Poole. In her own way, Antoinette is an accomplice in her own imprisonment, for she seems to prefer this to the outside knowledge base: "After all the house is big and safe, a security from the world outside which, say what you like, can be a black and cruel world to a woman" (Rhys 105-106).

For Sarah, God does indeed fill the desert. This offends Bendrix, who tries, unpersuasively, to get Sarah to come back to him. Her terminal does not end his longing for her or his growing dubiety about his own atheism. The attitudes of Bendrix represent the way society tends to place women. He sees her as someone in need of religion, in part because she is a woman. He also views this as something she will get over when she has a man to give herself to as society expects. Greene presents the male and female point of view by splitting the focus between the different points of view. While the novel is presented largely through the eyes of Maurice Bendrix (a man whose reactions to the world are not always moral) another portion of the novel takes t
