ASEAN was Formed

The member nations were third cosmos countries that had up to that time relied heavily on foreign markets, and integrity of the goals of regionalism was to combine the resources of the countries and convert them from five individual(a) weak entities into one(a) strong entity capable of standing on its own. This was an ambitious task, because

The economies of the individual ASEAN member countries were closely integrated with a world scotch system that was dominated by the United States. These countries were dependent, for their survival as well as prosperity, on foreign markets, loans and investments" (Mahapatra 1990: 27).

As a pull up stakes of this drawing together, it was hoped that regional unity would naturally result and that stinting integration within the region would be easier to facilitate. sensation of the fundamental purposes of ASEAN, thence at least on the egress was to accelerate the economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region (Mahapatra 1990: 19). Furthermore, ASEAN's founders hoped to promote regional peace and stability in the region by encouraging a "respect for legal expert and rule of law" (Mahapatra 1990: 19, 26). Less obvious to the outside observer but certainly part of the driving force fanny the development of ASEAN was the desire to solve Asiatic problems in an Asian way rather than by imitating Western solutions (Mahapatra 1990: 6).

Flying Geese Model 2 (Closed Type)

Japan has do several attempts at least, outwardly to assist the ASEAN nations in their economic recovery. In October 1998, Japan announced the "New Miyazawa Initiative," which included a package of declare measures totaling $30 billion, of which $15 billion was do available for the economic recovery in Asian countries, and other $15 billion was set aside for their possible short-run capital needs during the process of implementing economic reform ("Asian economical Crisis and Japan's Contribution 2000").

A more modern flying geese sticker was proposed by Dr. Sabro Okita in a presentation to the 4th peaceful Economic Cooperation Council Conference in Seoul (1985; Fig. 1). Dr. Okita explains that in the Pacific region, the United States developed first as the lead country, and then in the 19th century Japan began to catch up in nondurable and durable consumer goods, and then in capital goods sectors, in that order. He points out that the Asian newly industrialized countries (NICs) and ASEAN countries are now following in Japan's footsteps ("Flying Geese Model"). An adjustment of the flying geese model in Figure 2 shows two types of flying geese model, an open and a closed model. Dr. Rhyu Sang-Young argues that Japan has move the closed type of industrial speculation that mitigates against regional integration (Sang-Young 2005; Fig. 2).

country, was neither a member of ASEAN nor overtly involved in its development. However, it played a strong role behind the scenes, providing support and "discreet guidance," prompting the comment that "Washington almost acted standardised a midwife in the birth of ASEAN" (Mahapatra 1990: 6).
